Doesn't money sound great?
When you walk through aisles of slot machines, it's
not a coincidence. In the mid-'80s, makers of slot
machines began programming all simple tones in the key
of C, so that the chorus would be pleasing to players,
said Rick Sorensen, spokesman for slot manufacturer
IGT.
The practice was started by an IGT engineer who was
programming a chip to make clicking noises when the
reels spun. He didn't like the clicking, so he made
the chip play four notes of the C chord: C, E, G and C
one octave higher. The notes played randomly when the
reels were spinning, and all four played together as
each credit was racked up or as each coin came out.
"For the next decade, this was the sound you'd
hear coming from all directions as you walked through
a casino," Sorensen said. "The overall
effect was somewhat atmospheric and quite nice, since
all the games were 'in tune' with one another."
In recent years manufacturers have started using
licensed songs or original compositions and speech in
their slot machines, so not all sounds are in the key
of C. But certain batches of slot machines, especially
those with spinning reels without video screens, still
operate using those random notes.
